EssentialJob Summary
Operations Supervisor is responsible for supervising the collections activities in one or more lines of business (commercial, residential, roll‑off and container delivery pickup). The supervisor oversees drivers, helpers and other members of the management team and works with the Operations Site Manager to implement tactical initiatives that drive functional excellence and budget achievement. The supervisor ensures adherence to accident prevention programs and leads operations to comply with all safety, environmental, operating, regulatory, accounting, ethics and other standards.
Responsibilities include the execution and delivery of Safety, Customer Experience and Efficiency while supporting a culture of employee engagement.
- Lead drivers to exceed productivity goals and expectations for all routes.
- Create, modify and improve routes to maximize density and improve efficiency.
- Reduce route hours using techniques such as service conversions and container upsizing.
- Provide leadership to achieve and communicate safety goals and objectives.
- Remove unsafe conditions or situations from drivers’ routes.
- Work with the sales team to identify and eliminate unsafe conditions on new or existing customers and seek service alternatives where appropriate.
- Partner with the maintenance department to ensure all equipment remains in working order and complies with safety standards.
- Oversee effective safety and accident prevention programs and maintain a safe work environment for all employees.
- Engage employees in active participation to instill a culture of safety through personal commitment and outreach.
- Observe drivers on the road and correct safety problems on the scene while documenting violations.
- Document and maintain records required by regulatory agencies such as the Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and audit documentation related to route operations daily (e.g., DVIRs, driver time and attendance, open tickets) and follow up where appropriate.
- Perform route vehicle inspections.
- Conduct on‑scene incident/accident investigations and assist drivers in preparing accident reports and safety violation documents.
- Conduct daily shift safety briefings at company depots.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- 3+ years of experience in transportation supervision or a similar lead role.
- Proficient knowledge of DOT rules and regulations.
- Extensive knowledge of New York City roads and highways for route planning and support.
- Current driver’s license with no disqualifying violations on MVR.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently.
- Intermediate Word and Excel skills for correspondence and reporting duties.
- Intermediate MS Outlook skills for regular daily communication with coworkers and departments.
- Intermediate verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness to be flexible with schedule start and end times.
- Open and honest communication with team and manager at all levels.
- Desire to learn, grow and build capacity to improve oneself and the team.
- May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
- Must be able to physically mount and dismount the truck throughout the workday.
