Base pay range

$53,764.00/yr - $68,630.00/yr

Duties Description
  • Inspect the mechanical condition of buses, heavy duty trucks, vans, suburban’s, station wagons and other commercial vehicles.
  • Check both controlled and preventative maintenance programs, driver’s hours of labor records and facility of fleet operators.
  • Perform post-accidents inspections, testify at hearings when required and keep records and submitted reports of inspections.
  • Enforce driver, vehicle and hazardous materials regulations.
  • Perform duties independently without direct supervision and be responsible for scheduling your own work and adhering to your own timetable. However, workload will be assigned by the supervisor.
  • May be required to inspect other bus inspection areas.

This position requires extensive daily travel within an assigned geographic area. You will be required to operate a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job. You must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. Field work and travel expenses are reimbursed on a fixed schedule.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Although this position will report to Main Office Albany, the incumbent will be assigned to work from a location within a designated territory.

Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in the repair and/or mechanical inspection of buses (15 passengers or more) and/or heavy-duty trucks (GVWR 18,000 pounds or more) which must have included one year experience with antilock brake systems. Experience limited to maintenance, repair, or inspection activities obtained while working in a commercial garage, where most of the work is primarily related to automobiles, pick‑up trucks, small vans, or ambulances and only occasionally to buses or heavy‑duty trucks, is NOT qualifying.
  • An associate’s degree in automotive or diesel technology AND one year of experience as described above.
  • A graduate from a one‑year post‑high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology
    ** AND two years of experience as described above.

Important:
You must indicate on your application the capacity and/or weight of the types of equipment you have experience either repairing or inspecting. You must also indicate that you have the required one year experience with antilock brake systems.

A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee. Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.

Candidates must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter. This position requires considerable travel.

Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

Additional Comments

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
