Assistant Coach Cheer
Reports to: Head Coach Cheer
Job SummaryAs safety is the first priority, the Assistant Cheer Coach assists in ensuring all safety procedures outlined by USA Cheer are strictly adhered to and supports the program to prepare student‑athletes through practice sessions and performance with a focus on basketball home contests.
Essential Functions Practices- Assist in ensuring practices are structured and organized.
- Support the head coach and ensure a safe practice environment for every routine.
- Ensure all practice routines are certified and in compliance with USA Cheer regulations.
- Teach proper progressive technique for all movements, including collegiate pyramids, stunts and other routines.
- Assist in team management.
- Join head coach in educating team members about high‑profile representation of the university.
- Encourage a positive attitude when interacting with staff, faculty, and opposing teams.
- Ensure appropriate attire for team travel, practice, games and events.
- Help ensure student‑athletes are always respectful.
- Maintain knowledge of NCAA, BIG EAST Conference rules and St. John’s policies.
- Ensure 100% compliance throughout the calendar year for all personnel associated with the program.
- Follow all ticket policies.
- Assist head coach in ensuring all safety procedures by USA Cheer are strictly adhered to.
- Assist head coach in management and oversight at all required athletic contests and events focusing on basketball home contests.
This position monitors student‑athletes and volunteer staff. May not be listed on the Restricted, Suspended and Ineligible persons list from USA Cheer.
Physical DemandsStand and perform duties on the basketball court including passing, running, rebounding, and spot stunts and tumbling to create a safe environment.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work- 8:00 am — 6:00 pm (Hours will vary).
Travel to basketball games at Madison Square Garden, UBS Arena and the Barclays Center.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Background checks required.
- Minimum one year collegiate coaching experience.
- USA Cheer membership and certification including concussion certification.
- CPR/AED certified.
Hourly salary for this position is $20 per hour. St. John’s University considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
