Job Summary

As safety is the first priority, the Assistant Cheer Coach assists in ensuring all safety procedures outlined by USA Cheer are strictly adhered to. The person in this position also assists in the management of all personnel and aspects of the program to prepare student-athletes through practice sessions and preparation for performances, including assisting in the management and/or oversight at required athletic contests and events, with the premier focus being basketball home contests.

The Assistant Cheer Coach coordinates timeliness and preparedness for all pregame activities. Any team appearance should follow the dress code policy and be in uniform, including travel to and from games. The person in this position should ensure that the team remains positive and professional during games and maintains high standards of conduct and discipline while serving as a proxy for the head cheer coach when needed.

Functions

Practices

  • Assist in ensuring practices are structured and organized.
  • Support the head coach and ensure a safe practice environment for every routine.
  • Ensure all practice routines are certified and in compliance with USA Cheer regulations.
  • Teach proper, progressive technique for all movements, including but not limited to collegiate pyramids, collegiate stunts, and other routines.

The assistant coach must moderate practice routines based on skill level and the strength and coordination of each technique in the head coach is not present. The assistant coach should assist the head coach in teaching and educating each team member on safety guidelines specific to techniques such as 2.5 high pyramids, single and multi-base partner stunt techniques and inversions, and flipping basket tosses.

Recruiting

  • Assist in recruiting prospective students.
  • Help ensure tryouts and clinics are organized, well-advertised, and well-attended.
  • Ensure all insurance guidelines and safety procedures are met.

Team Management & Representation

  • Assist in team management.
  • Educate team members about their high-profile nature and the importance of representing the university.
  • Encourage a positive attitude when interacting with staff, faculty, and opposing teams.
  • Ensure appropriate attire for team travel, practice, games, and events.
  • Help ensure student-athletes are always respectful.

Administration

  • Establish and maintain knowledge of NCAA and BIG EAST Conference rules and St. John’s policies and procedures.
  • Maintain operating guidelines to ensure compliance throughout the calendar year for all personnel in the program.
  • Ensure team members follow all ticket policies.
  • Assist the head coach in ensuring safety procedures outlined by USA Cheer are strictly adhered to.

Games & Appearances

  • Assist the head coach in providing management and oversight at all required athletic contests and events, with a premier focus on basketball home contests.
