About The Department

The Community Impact Department encompasses Youth Programs, Community Programs, and Youth Events. The Youth Program team develops, administers, and supports a portfolio of youth running programs. The Community Program team offers walking/fitness programs for older adults, a free running platform, and other community initiatives. The Youth Events team oversees over 35 events per year.

About The Position

The NYRR Striders older adult fitness program has weekly sessions, typically Monday‑Friday mornings and afternoons. Coaches lead walking and fitness sessions at parks and neighborhood centers. The part‑time position requires at least two sessions per week, with typical shifts Monday‑Friday 9 am‑12 pm or 1 pm‑4 pm, and a minimum of two events per program year.

Job Responsibilities
  • Lead a functional dance/mobility based group fitness session for older adults.
  • Prepare and implement the Striders Walking and Beyond curriculum.
  • Ensure participant safety and support throughout each session.
  • Arrive promptly at assigned locations.
  • Complete daily attendance and assist with enrollment and event registration.
  • Perform administrative tasks required for scheduling and program implementation.
  • Attend staff meetings, curriculum training, and team events.
  • Maintain communication with the Striders Program Director and team.
  • Respond to correspondence promptly and meet specified deadlines.
  • Communicate correct technique to improve participant pace and mobility.
  • Contribute program enhancements based on practice and experience.
Job Requirements
  • 1+ year of customer service experience.
  • 2+ years of coaching physical activity with any age group.
  • Experience teaching older adults or non‑traditional populations preferred.
  • Knowledge of walking or running training for beginners.
  • Ability to apply musicality to structured movement/functional fitness.
  • Knowledge of best practices in older adult fitness and age‑related issues.
Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or college experience preferred.
  • First Aid and CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Knowledge of Physical Literacy (or willingness to attend training).
  • Must hold a senior fitness, group fitness, or running coach certification from a nationally recognized program such as ACE, NASM, AFFA, APFA, ISSA, USATF, or RRCA.
Skills And Attributes
  • Ability to coach and implement training plans for novice‑advanced fitness/walker/runner participants.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to facilitate games and team bonding activities.
  • Ability to motivate and encourage new fitness participants.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of NYC neighborhoods is a plus.
  • Fluency in another language is a plus.
Other Requirements
  • Willingness to travel to all sites across the five NYC boroughs.
  • Ability to work a consistent weekly schedule of at least two sessions per week.
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed for events, trainings, and quarterly meetings.
Salary

$30.00 per hour.
