Job OverviewCanonical is hiring an Engineering Manager, MAAS to lead the Metal as a Service (MAAS) team. MAAS is a rapidly evolving software stack written in Python and Go that provides private bare‑metal infrastructure with a cloud‑style on‑demand API. The role will drive engineering excellence, technical strategy, and team growth for one of Canonical’s flagship data‑center products.
Responsibilities- Lead a distributed team of engineers in your time zone and manage remote collaboration
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members through career planning and performance feedback
- Own the engineering execution of MAAS features, from low‑level hardware provisioning to the web interface, CLI, and API
- Advocate modern software development practices, participating in code and architectural reviews
- Engage with cross‑functional teams such as cloud‑init, LXD, and Canonical’s public cloud offerings
- Travel to internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent
- Proven experience delivering software with Python, Golang, or similar languages
- Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
- Strong understanding of modern Linux cloud‑computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes
- Technical aptitude for distributed systems and complex system design
- Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
- Experience with agile software development methodologies
- Strong leadership and people‑management skills with a track record of building high‑performance teams
- Ability to travel internationally up to two weeks per year for company events
This is a work‑from‑anywhere position available in EMEA or the Americas.
