Brookhaven National Laboratory invites exceptional candidates to apply for a post‑doctoral research associate position in machine learning (ML). This role offers the opportunity to conduct both basic and applied research in collaboration with scientists working on diverse scientific and security problems of interest to BNL and the Department of Energy (DOE). Topics include novel ML models, Large Language Models (LLMs) and multimodal foundation models, agentic AI for scientific domains, and techniques supporting end‑users of applied ML methods.

  Initial 2‑year appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding.
• Location:
  
  BNL, Upton, NY (fully onsite).
• Salary: $71,900 – $119,000 per year.
• Eligibility:
  Ph.D. awarded within past 5 years; post‑docs’ combined experience not to exceed 5 years.

• Conduct research in ML, foundation models, and agentic AI models for scientific discovery.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts on data generation, processing, and method evaluation.
• Develop high‑quality research ideas and directions in collaboration with mentors.
• Communicate progress, challenges, and achievements, and engage within and beyond the department on new potential collaborations.

• Ph.D. in computer science or related field (e.g., engineering, applied mathematics, statistics) awarded within the past 5 years.
• Strong theoretical understanding and practical experience in ML, foundation models, and agentic AI techniques.
• Demonstrated publication record in the ML field.
• Excellent programming and computer science skills.

• Experience developing novel ML, foundation, or agentic AI models.
• Familiarity with state‑of‑the art foundation models and agentic AI models.
• Experience with large‑scale deep learning systems and training models using GPU/TPU parallelization.
• Experience in multimodal data analysis (e.g., image, video, text).
• Experience working in multidisciplinary collaborations.

• Mandatory REAL  compliant documentation for site access.
• Initial 2‑year term with renewal contingent on performance and funding.
• Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.
• BNL policy limits total post‑doctoral and R&D work experience to 5 years.
