Overview
Field Based Peer Specialist - Substance Abuse Service Center at Bowery Residents' Committee (BRC).
Position summary:
Work in a two-person field team with the Field Based Social Work Supervisor to support clients with substance use disorders in the shelter system. Engage with clients in assigned shelters, provide peer support, and assist with access to substance use disorder (SUD) services and harm reduction resources.
- Work in a two-person team with the Field Based Social Work Supervisor to address the needs of clients with substance use disorders in the shelter system.
- Meet with clients in assigned shelters; educate all clients on NARCAN, harm reduction, and safe-use practices; engage each client with guidance and advice as needed.
- Spend time with clients during mealtimes and recreation time to promote wellbeing and provide peer support.
- Escort and assist clients in accessing SUD service providers, including harm reduction services.
- Attend community meetings as assigned.
- Collect data and write progress notes on services and referrals provided.
- Report to the Field Based Social Worker.
- Build rapport with shelter staff; provide emergency first aid/CPR assistance when needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Full-time 35 hours per week
- Monday–Friday 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- 4 field days and 1 office day per week
- High School diploma or GED and Certified Peer Specialist (CRPA) certificate.
- Knowledge of OASAS rules and regulations; ability to maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
- Basic computer literacy required.
- Vaccination preferred but not required.
