New Alternatives supports LGBTQ+ homeless youth and young adults in transitioning out of the shelter system to build stable, self-sufficient lives. The organization provides a range of services, including case management, education support, life skills training, community-building activities, artistic opportunities, and specialized programs for HIV+ youth. Guided by principles of harm reduction, youth empowerment, and development, New Alternatives focuses on addressing homelessness, poverty, and marginalization affecting LGBTQ+ youth.

With a passion for advocacy, they are at the forefront of creating positive change for a population disproportionately impacted by homelessness and related challenges in New York City.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role for a Licensed Social Worker based in New York, NY. The Licensed Social Worker will provide individual and group counseling for LGBTQ+ homeless youth, create and implement case plans, and facilitate access to resources such as housing, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Additional responsibilities include conducting client assessments, maintaining confidential records, connecting clients to external services, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver effective and holistic support.

The position requires consistent dedication to serving vulnerable populations and advocating for their needs.

Qualifications
  • Licensure as a Social Worker (LMSW or LCSW) in the state of New York
  • Experience with harm reduction counseling, and crisis intervention case management, and working with LGBTQ+ individuals
  • Skills in communication, active listening, empathy, and conflict resolution
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care, harm reduction principles, and mental health support
  • Familiarity with resources related to housing, healthcare, education, and employment
  • Ability to work effectively in diverse environments, with a commitment to exclusivity
  • Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills
  • Experience working with youth or marginalized populations is a plus
