The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) and the District of New Jersey's Newark Reentry Court (ReNew) are collaborating on a study incorporating social work practice into its problem-solving courts, including its Pretrial Opportunity Program ("POP") and its three reentry courts ("ReNew"). POP is an interdisciplinary initiative that serves people post-conviction, pre-sentencing who have addiction-driven criminal histories and who are engaged in treatment.

ReNew is an interdisciplinary initiative that seeks to address the gap in services available for recently released individuals from the federal system with the highest risk of reoffending.

POSITION IS 100% GRANT-FUNDED. CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT IS CONTINGENT ON FUNDING AVAILABILITY.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and the Initiative Advisor for POP and ReNew, the social work responsibilities would include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading development and delivery of complex, multi-faceted programs for POP and ReNew participants.
  • Leading social work case management of the social work team (including an additional part-time social worker and two to four social work students) for ReNew participants.
  • Advising the POP team, and the ReNew team, comprised of federal judges, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, Assistant Federal Public Defenders, and U.S. Pretrial Services and U.S. Probation Officers, on supervision of participants and court process development.
  • Oversees the operation of Danny's Pantry (including interfacing with Court personnel in running pantry; overseeing procurement of pantry goods; managing intake and distribution of pantry goods; training, supervising, and coordinating volunteers from the U.S. District Court, U.S. Attorney's Office, and Federal Public Defenders offices; facilitating and managing significant community partnerships).
  • Facilitating monthly meetings with Initiative Advisor reviewing court programming and field education assignments for social work students.
  • Providing field Instruction for graduate social work student interns including review of weekly process recordings, provision of weekly task supervision and completion of required evaluations.
  • Creating and updating a needs assessment tool with Initiative Advisor to guide integration of social work practice within the Newark and Camden Re-entry.
  • Research best practice court-focused programming to assess service provision and identify the gaps in services available for recently released individuals from the federal system in New Jersey.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent, plus 3 - 5 years of full-time professional work experience in legal settings required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters in Social Work (M.S.W) degree required
  • Previous experience working in a court-based environment strongly preferred
  • Experience providing task or clinical supervision to others strongly preferred
  • Experience in providing both individual and group counseling, as well as experience and a high comfort level in facilitating group workshops
  • Experience in program development and implementation
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred but not required
Other Requirements
  • Successful passing of background check and fingerprint process
  • Supervisor in Field Instruction (SIFI) certified or eligible and willing to take the SIFI class upon employment
  • Experience working with those impacted by criminal legal systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with parties at all levels, including students, families, faculty, external stakeholders, etc.
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel and Power Point, Access and other data management programs. Knowledge and use of the Google Drive application required.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
