Position Overview
S:
US seeks a Housing Specialist for its homeless prevention program located at W. 181st Street (St. Nicholas Ave) New York, NY 10033. The Housing Specialist will provide after‑care services to program participants and their families.
- Interview clients to assess housing needs and submit appropriate applications to community resources.
- Conduct groups to discuss available housing options and how to secure an apartment.
- Accompany residents to housing interviews, housing fairs, and complete housing applications when necessary.
- Provide housing resources (phone numbers to landlords, housing programs, etc.) and act as liaison between landlords and clients.
- Refer residents to get PPD and physicals within two weeks of entrance into the facility.
- Obtain an accurate history of client’s housing situation to assess needed services.
- Facilitate Tier II interviews and act as liaison between Tier II shelter and clients.
- Submit housing applications for all available programs (Section 8, NYCHA).
- Handle requests for extensions to be submitted to HRA.
- Refer residents to Public Assistance and monitor compliance with HRA and the ADVENT program.
- Negotiate, assess and assist client needs with respect to benefits and follow the resident’s case from entry to discharge.
- Assist and escort residents to HRA/social service agency appointments when necessary.
- Participate in staff, service plan review, and clinical team meetings.
- Maintain accurate records and progress notes in client charts.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Two years in human services field and knowledge of trauma.
- Good interpersonal skills; able to work independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
- Solid computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish speaking preferred.
