About Barrier Free Living (BFL)

Barrier Free Living (BFL) is dedicated to helping New Yorkers with disabilities live independently in the community. Through its various programs, BFL provides a broad range of residential and non-residential services to disabled survivors of domestic violence. Services include case management; housing placements; independent living skills training; occupational therapy; individual counseling; advocacy within the medical, mental health, child welfare, law enforcement, and criminal justice systems;

and referrals to outside services.

About Freedom House

Freedom House provides emergency shelter and comprehensive domestic violence services for individuals, including those with disabilities, and their children. As a crisis shelter for survivors of domestic violence, we offer a full range of trauma-informed supports to help individuals and families recover from their experiences and rebuild their lives. Services include individual and group counseling, advocacy, case management, assistance with housing and government benefits, on-site childcare, occupational therapy, an on-site LPN, and mental health referrals.

Freedom House is the first completely accessible domestic violence shelter for individuals with disabilities in the country.

Position Summary

The Coordinator of Family Services is responsible for overseeing and delivering trauma-informed, family-centered services for residents at the domestic violence crisis shelter. This position supports families in crisis through assessment, case management, counseling, advocacy, and group facilitation, ensuring that both parents and children receive coordinated, compassionate care that promotes safety, healing, and stability. The Coordinator works collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to address the complex needs of families and help them transition toward independence and permanent housing.

Responsibilities
  • Complete comprehensive family assessments for all families entering the shelter.

  • Complete phone screenings for admission into the shelter.

  • Provide crisis intervention, supportive counseling, advocacy, and case management for families as needed.

  • Maintain an individual caseload of approximately 15–20 families.

  • Facilitate parenting groups, family workshops, and support groups addressing domestic violence, trauma, and positive parenting.

  • Collaborate with schools, child protective services, and community partners to support children’s educational and emotional well-being.

  • Advocate and collaborate with community agencies to support child, family, and agency outcomes.

  • Provide referrals and information to outside agencies related to child development, recreation, and mental health.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences to ensure coordinated care among social services, counseling, and housing departments.

  • Maintain adequate and timely case records utilizing the Fam Care case management system.

  • Participate in all required internal and external trainings and meetings.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Mental Health Counseling; pursuing licensure (LMSW, LMHC, or equivalent).

  • Knowledge of child development, trauma-informed care, and family systems theory.

  • Strong crisis intervention, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations and across disciplines.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Google Workspace, and database management systems.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred; ASL knowledge a plus.
