Founded in 1974, Community Access continues to lead supportive housing and social services for people with mental health concerns in NYC. We proudly advocate for human rights, social justice, and economic opportunities. Our programs span 25 locations across three boroughs, including over 1200 supportive housing units, the Howie the Harp Advocacy Center, peer‑driven crisis respite, Adult Home Initiative, ACT, and IMT.

Program

Description

The Howie the Harp Advocacy Center (HTH) offers services that help individuals with mental health concerns find meaningful, permanent employment and develop careers in human services. All HTH programs are founded on self‑determination and peer expertise, providing training, internship experience, job placement and ongoing support through the Comprehensive Peer Training Program and the Assisted Competitive Employment Program (ACE).

Position Overview

The Career Coach provides personalized employment support—including job/internship preparation, job development, placement, and retention coaching—to HTH participants. Services are delivered on site and in the field, helping trainees succeed in the classroom, during internships, and in sustained employment.

Key Performance Indicators
  • Progress notes, assessments, and service plans completed within required time frames and all contacts documented within 48 hours.
  • All assigned participants have at least one monthly meeting.
  • 60% of assigned participants complete the classroom training.
  • 70% of participants who complete training enroll in an internship.
  • 80% of interns secure employment.
  • 50% of employed participants retain their position for at least 90 days.
Job Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Peer identity (lived experience of mental health concerns) required.
  • Empathy and professional, respectful relationships required.
  • Strong computer, organizational, and documentation skills required.
  • Minimum three years of experience in mental health services, preferably in employment, peer support, or rehabilitation (preferred).
  • Must possess NYS OMH Peer Specialist certification or be willing to obtain one within six months of employment.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills required.
  • Commitment to Community Access and HTH mission and values required.
  • Howie The Harp Peer Training Program graduate preferred.
  • Training/group facilitation experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of benefits, entitlements or work incentives preferred.
  • Fingerprinted and cleared by NYS Justice Center.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with cloud‑based data systems, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Creative, flexible, and self‑motivated follow‑through.
