Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. Our programs serve over 325,000 clients annually, including affordable housing, family violence services, Holocaust survivor assistance, geriatric social work, crisis intervention, and a large kosher food distribution program.

Met Council delivers services to survivors of intimate partner violence and sex trafficking both directly and in collaboration with Family Justice Centers, community‑based organizations, and a network of Jewish Community Councils. We specialize in supporting diverse segments of New York City’s Jewish and immigrant communities, including the low‑income elderly, Russian‑speaking émigrés, and Orthodox Jewish populations.

Position Summary

The Social Worker will work with Jewish‑community clients who have experienced intimate partner violence, providing intake assessment, safety planning, financial grant eligibility determination, counseling, legal referrals, advocacy letters, and culturally informed outreach. The role includes coordination with partner agencies and participation in community outreach and grant reporting.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Assess client needs.
  • Answer Family Violence Helpline calls and provide immediate crisis support and safety planning services.
  • Conduct intake at the Brooklyn Hub and remotely.
  • Obtain appropriate documentation.
  • Design a safety plan with clients.
  • Perform case management services, including assistance with Public Assistance, housing, and other public and philanthropic services.
  • Provide information and referrals to community resources.
  • Offer individual and group counseling services.
  • Determine clients' eligibility for financial assistance and complete applications.
  • Maintain timely paperwork and database input (e.g., Salesforce).
  • Build relationships and collaborate with partner agencies, including legal services.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity to all clients.
  • Provide individual and group psychotherapy.
  • Engage in regular culturally informed community outreach.
  • Comply with grant requirements and assist in preparing grant reports.
  • Collaborate with the Family Violence Team and cover for staff absences.
  • Manage a large caseload of clients.
  • Lead educational workshops in individual and group settings based on community need.
  • Coordinate with UJA partner agencies for Jewish communal outreach.
  • Participate in formulating community‑specific outreach events.
  • Provide information and referral for community resources.
  • Attend trainings and seminars on family violence and case work topics.
  • Participate in task forces, networks, and represent the agency at meetings.
  • Attend individual supervision and weekly group meetings.
  • Supervise MSW student interns when available.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required.
Competencies
  • Capable of working with many cultures in a sensitive and caring manner.
  • Ability to speak publicly about intimate partner violence in the Jewish community.
  • Effective in a busy office environment serving highly stressed clients.
  • Commitment to serving vulnerable or poor New Yorkers.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to assess client safety and create safety plans.
  • Ability to provide short‑term psychotherapy and support survivors.
  • Manage own time, priorities, and resources to achieve goals.
  • Apply Social Work ethics to support client and system needs.
Skill And Education
  • Counseling License – LMSW, LCSW, or LMHC (required).
  • Prior experience working with domestic violence victims (preferred).
  • Prior extensive experience working with the Orthodox Jewish community (required).
  • Bi‑lingual Yiddish or Hebrew (preferred).
  • Superior interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent computer literacy.
Special Requirements
  • Position is co‑located at the main office and the Brooklyn Hub.
  • Must be able to travel on public transportation to offices as determined by Met Council administration and grant requirements.

Compensation: $65,000 to $80,000 per year, commensurate with skills, experience, and education.
