Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Duties Description
- Perform general custodial tasks and maintenance of building, such as cleaning common areas, offices and restrooms, necropsy suites and laboratories, painting, moving furniture, and trash removal.
- Monitor generator fuel level and test transfer switch weekly.
- Monitor and test eyewash stations.
- Monitor and alternate boiler circulator motors.
- Change rooftop exhaust fan belts.
- Wash windows.
- Maintain pest control.
- Change light bulbs inside and outside.
- Serve as primary point of contact for contractors and vendors on site; perform other duties as assigned.
- Occasionally perform general grounds maintenance tasks, such as mowing lawns, trimming and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining parking lots and sidewalks, snow and ice removal.
- Perform basic building maintenance and routine semi‑skilled maintenance like repair of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, and equipment maintenance.
- Must be able to lift and carry objects and equipment up to 60 pounds; work comfortably at heights, such as climbing ladders; operate a motor vehicle with snowplow, other motorized equipment; and a variety of light mechanized equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of full‑time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two‑year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association‑Partnership (NYS CSEA‑P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
- Successful completion of the NYS CSEA‑P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes: 288 hours of trade‑specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math coursework, 45 hours of technical communications coursework, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework. This does not include 4,000 hours of on‑the‑job training required for the NYS CSEA‑P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
- When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 11/30/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 60 pounds.
Will be required to get rabies pre‑exposure series and seasonal flu vaccines.
