The mission of the Sidewalk Program is to support the agency's goal by providing for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people by making sidewalks safe and accessible for all pedestrians.
Under general supervision, the selected Apprentice Inspectors H&S (Highway and Sewers) will be responsible for performing the following duties but not limited to: inspecting the grading, paving and repaving of streets; inspecting the maintenance, repair and construction of sewers and appurtenances, house sewer connections, retaining walls, streets and street openings; checking the size of street openings and the satisfactory restoration of pavement or sidewalk;
investigating complaints and reports on findings; driving a passenger car or light truck to and from work assignments.
The Apprentice Highway and Sewer Inspector position is an apprenticeship program with various salary levels. Once in the program and after successfully completing a probationary period, salary will automatically increase each year (annual anniversary of the original appointment date) to the following designation levels:
- New Hire Rate $36,081 / Incumbent Rate: $41,493
- After completion of the first year $39,200 / $45,080
- After completion of the second year $48,747
- After completion of the third year $52,728
- After completion of the fourth year $56,703

Minimum QualificationsLicense Requirement
Must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Preference will be given to candidate possessing a four-year high school diploma or its equivalent.
THERE ARE NO FORMAL EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION.
Residency RequirementNew York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
