Duties Description The significant number of tasks and duties that are performed within the automotive maintenance shops of the New York State Police and are unique to vehicle maintenance for police vehicles require specialized skills and experience not found in routine automotive maintenance. The Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) within the State Police structure has two basic duties. First, they must perform skilled mechanical work in the State Police automotive repair shop in regards to the maintenance, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered self-propelled and non-self-propelled motor-driven equipment.
Second, they must configure vehicles with special equipment used in law enforcement. This configuration includes, but is not limited to, the installation of brackets for computers, printers and scanning devices; the installation of emergency lighting units; installation of shotgun brackets; installation of front seat/back seat barriers. The Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) must also assist radio vendors with radio control head and chassis installation.
DUTIES:
Perform skilled mechanical and electrical work, diagnose problems and causes of breakdowns on gas- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
Maintain work orders and maintenance records on all work performed.
Visually examine the equipment, review breakdown reports and, if necessary, discuss the problem with the operator to determine the nature and extent of problem.
Use appropriate test equipment and observation to diagnose the cause of faulty mechanical or electrical performance.
Utilize technical manuals and experience, plan the work procedure required to make the repairs and order replacement parts and materials.
Perform repairs using mechanic's hand and power tools.
Perform preventative maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and trouble-free operation.
Operate a tow truck, flat bed truck and other types of motor vehicles.
Assist in the absence of the Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 2.
Any other job-related duties instructed by the Motor Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 2 or other competent authority.
Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience under a skilled journeyman, automotive or diesel mechanic, which provides training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program,
OR
Apprentice training in automotive or diesel mechanics,
OR
Training gained by completion of technical courses in automotive or diesel mechanics at a school or technical institute may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
At time of appointment, candidate must possess:
A valid New York State Driver's License with a non-Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDL) (Class
C) tow truck endorsement;
A New York State Motor Vehicle Inspection Certification; and,
