OverviewTectonic is currently seeking Steel Inspectors to work on a project‑basis at Steel Fabrication Shops located in Chicago, IL, New Castle, PA, Russellville, AL, and Pittsfield, ME. The essential functions of this position include traveling to the project site on a daily basis, monitoring construction operations, and using applicable field testing procedures and testing equipment to perform required field and building inspections and testing, as well as all related testing as required by the project and client to determine compliance with project plans and specifications.
Testing procedures and inspections will primarily include structural steel testing. Essential functions also include preparation of Daily Field Reports, communication of deficiencies observed in the field to project managers, contractors, and/or client representatives, and interpretation of project‑related drawings and documents, as well as all other duties as assigned.
- Must possess a HS Diploma/equivalent and possess and maintain both of the certifications or experience listed below:
- Valid AWS Certified Welding Inspector;
- NDT Visual and Magnetic Particle OR NACE Level 2 inspections qualifications and experience;
- Effective oral and written communication skills;
- Understanding of the fundamentals of building inspection codes and requirements in order to carry out testing, including, but not limited to, International Building Codes, ASTM Standards, and TMS standards;
- Must be detail oriented;
- May also require valid, clean driver’s license and personal vehicle to travel to and transport testing equipment to project sites.
- Assume a stationary position;
- Handle, inspect, and/or feel documents, materials and/or equipment relevant to the job;
- Communicate with colleagues, supervisors, and clients using Company email and telephone systems;
- Move around on the job‑site, including ascending or descending on the landscape or on a ladder, and positioning oneself appropriately to access necessary testing materials and equipment, usually for prolonged periods of time;
- Lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. for some types of monitoring and inspections;
- Good visual skills, including focused depth perception;
- Regular daily operations of a motor‑vehicle, which may require remaining stationary for extended periods of time.
Employees may also be required to undergo substance abuse testing in accordance with project requirements, US DOT Regulations, and/or Company policy. The employee may occasionally be required to operate a computer, as well as other related office machinery, such as calculators, printers, and copy machines. The physical demands described above are representative of those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Pay Range: $35.00 - $45.00 / hour
