Duties Description
Under supervision of the Director and Park Manager, the Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) will be responsible for the maintenance and improvements at Bayard Cutting Arboretum. This includes 150 acres of grounds irrigation, and the eight structures on the property including the historic Manor House and the new Visitor Center.
Responsibilities- Conduct routine inspections of facilities, grounds, and equipment to recommend repairs and replacements.
- Communicate with Regional Maintenance regarding ongoing projects and park needs; submit and monitor work orders.
- Act as Project Manager for all maintenance, improvements, and construction projects working with LI Regional Maintenance, LI Engineering, and contractors.
- Perform maintenance, repairs, and improvements on complex two-wire irrigation system, including monitoring and programming the Base Line remote smart control system.
- Manage Phase 5 of irrigation development.
- Diagnose and repair issues in the Manor House, Concession (Hidden Oak Café), and other historic structures, including heating systems (aging steam and hot water systems) and sewage pumping systems.
- Monitor the specialized heating and cooling system (air-sourced heat pump) of the new Visitor Center, working with regional maintenance and contractors.
- Winterize and shutdown all irrigation and outdoor plumbing.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson, providing training equivalent to a formal apprenticeship, technical courses, or a two-year trades specialist traineeship.
- Successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a comparable program that includes 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math, 45 hours of technical communications, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading coursework with an average grade of "C" or better, plus 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
- When required to operate motor vehicles, possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the vehicle type.
- Verifiable part-time and volunteer experience may be prorated.
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter).
Operational NeedsMust possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows legal operation of a motor vehicle in NYS as a term and condition of employment. Must exhibit working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade.
Schedule Information- Monday to Friday 7 am to 3:30 pm
- Required to be on call for related emergencies

The hiring rate listed combines the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($50,425) with the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000). Similarly, the job rate posted is a combination of the statutory job rate ($61,548) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000).
