Duties Description Under supervision of the Director and Park Manager, the Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) will be responsible for the maintenance and improvements at Bayard Cutting Arboretum. This includes 150 acres of grounds irrigation, and the eight structures on the property including the historic Manor House and the new Visitor Center.
Duties include but are not limited to:
* Conducts routine inspections of facilities, grounds, and equipment to make recommendations for repairs and replacements.
* Communicates with Regional Maintenance as needed related to ongoing projects and the needs of the park. Submits and monitors work orders as needed.
* Project Manager of all maintenance, improvements, and construction projects working with LI Regional Maintenance, LI Engineering, and related contractors.
* Maintenance, repairs, and improvements on complex 2 wire irrigation system including monitoring and programming Base Line remote, smart control system.
* Manage Phase 5 of irrigation development.
* Diagnose and repairs in Manor House, Concession (Hidden Oak Café), and other historic structures, including heating systems (aging steam and hot water systems), and sewage pumping systems.
* Monitors the specialized heating and cooling system (air sourced heat pump) of the new Visitor Center, working with regional maintenance and contractors.
* Winterization and closing down of all irrigation and outdoor plumbing.
* Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson; which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program
* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of
blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an
average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also
includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
