SENIOR MAINTENANCE CRAFTSMAN – DPW WATER

WMEA GRADE 13

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs a variety of Journeyman level skilled duties and manual labor tasks in the construction, operation, and maintenance of main pipes, reservoirs, gates, and similar equipment and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION:

Works under the supervision of the Foreman, Working Foreman, or Head Treatment Plant Operator. May supervise the work of a small crew of workers of a lower pay grade.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

• Perform required maintenance of pumps, valves, hydrants, mains, services, meter, and other system equipment and instrumentation.
• Perform required maintenance of buildings, grounds, vehicles, reservoirs, and watershed.
• Install, replace, repair, and test water meters and other system equipment.
• Open and shut valves and gates, and operate other system components and equipment.
• Lay and connect service pipes with street mains.
• Install new water mains, valves, and hydrants.
• Direct emergency repair crews working on water leaks and breaks.
• When required, supervise a small crew of workers at a lower skill level, such as maintenance craftsmen and laborers.
• Inspect the work of maintenance craftsmen and laborers to verify that it conforms to specifications and blueprints.
• Perform other related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School graduate or equivalent. Massachusetts D2 Drinking Water Operators License or the ability to obtain necessary licenses within six months of hire. Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License Class D required. Minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience as a Water System maintenance Craftsman.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Demonstrated knowledge of the practices, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance, construction, and repair of municipal water systems.
• Demonstrated ability to work from blueprints, sketches, and layouts.
• Demonstrated knowledge of operation and maintenance of tools utilized to perform the job, including the ability to use various power, motorized, and hand tools/equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the operation and maintenance of a municipal water drinking system.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to use measuring devices in the performance of duties.
• Ability to assess emergency situations and take appropriate action.
• Ability to follow departmental rules, regulations, policies, and practices in all aspects of duties.
• Ability to work courteously and harmoniously with City employees and the public.
• Ability to complete reports timely and accurately.

PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS

Physical Skills

A significant portion of the day is spent standing and bending. Frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling of objects weighing up to approximately 50 lbs. 95% of work performed is outside in varying degrees of temperature.

Visual Skills

Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
