POSITION SUMMARY
The Safety Monitor is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of all clients, visitors, and staff within the shelter facility. This role involves monitoring facility activity, supporting daily operations, responding to incidents, and providing customer service with professionalism and compassion. The Safety Monitor helps maintain a safe, welcoming, and orderly environment in alignment with the shelter’s mission and policies. Safety Monitor reports to the Shift Supervisor or other designated party.
POSITIONDESCRIPTION Safety & Security Monitoring
- Monitor entrances, exits, hallways, and common areas to ensure the safety of clients, visitors, and staff.
- Conduct routine floor checks and perimeter rounds to identify safety concerns or facility issues.
- Observe client behavior, de-escalate conflicts, and report any unusual or unsafe activity promptly.
- Screen individuals entering the facility in accordance with shelter protocols (e.g., visitor logs, bag checks if applicable).
- Maintain awareness of emergency procedures and respond appropriately to crises or incidents.
- Provide respectful, trauma-informed customer service to clients and guests.
- Assist clients with questions, directions, and support accessing services within the shelter.
- Help enforce shelter rules consistently and fairly.
- Support the intake process by assisting staff with client arrivals when needed.
- Assist with day-to-day facility operations, including distributing supplies, monitoring scheduled activities, and supporting meal or program service as directed.
- Report maintenance, sanitation, or equipment concerns supervisory staff.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including incident reports and daily logs.
- Work closely with shelter staff, case managers, supervisors, and security personnel to promote a safe, stable environment.
- Participate in staff meetings and required trainings.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director.
COMPETENCY:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Fire Safety Coordinator Certificate or can be hired with the condition of obtaining within 30 days.
- NYC Food Handler's Certificate or can be hired with the condition of obtaining within 30 days.
- CPR/First Aid or can be hired with the condition of obtaining within 30 days.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress or crisis situations.
- Experience in shelters, security, social services, or similar environments is a plus but not required.
- Ability to stand, walk, and monitor facility areas for extended periods.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must possess sight, hearing and digital senses or use prosthesis that will enable the essential functions of the job to be completed.
This position is based in a shelter setting serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The role requires regular interaction with diverse populations and the ability to navigate challenging situations with empathy and professionalism.
