About This RoleThe Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a federal agency under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. TSA Officers are hired nationwide, either directly by TSA or by a private screening company under TSA’s Screening Partnership Program (SPP). This non‑armed, public‑facing role focuses on passenger screening, safety, and customer service at airport checkpoints.
Annual pay ranges from $55,000 to $80,000 with possible sign‑on bonuses up to $30,000. Benefits include medical and dental insurance, paid vacation, paid sick leave, ten paid holidays, life insurance, and a retirement plan.
Responsibilities- Screens passengers and baggage at airport security checkpoints.
- Operates X‑ray and detection equipment.
- Checks IDs and boarding passes.
- Conducts pat‑downs and bag checks when required.
- Follows security procedures to prevent prohibited items from entering the secure area.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 18 years of age or older.
- No prior experience required.
To be hired for a TSA Officer career position, applicants must take a competency assessment. Results determine advancement through the hiring process. The assessment is followed by interviews and background checks, culminating in a job offer if selected.
