Security Officer

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), Office of Security is seeking a motivated, dependable, and trustworthy security professional to join its team as a Security Officer (Full‑time). The tour of duty is Monday‑Friday from 12:00 am to 8:00 am.

This Security Officer (unarmed) position ensures a safe and secure workplace environment for employees, students, residents, guests, and visitors at all CSHL properties. The role requires operating security vehicles and enforcing CSHL safety and security policies.

• Patrol and monitor buildings and grounds to protect life and property and to prevent fire, thefts, vandalism, illegal entry, and unlawful/unauthorized activity.
• Respond to security/facility system alarms and emergency situations (fire, medical, police, utility, civil disorder, and intruder); serve as the on‑scene CSHL liaison with local first responders.
• Enforce security policy, secure doors, locks, etc., and activate or deactivate alarms, as required.
• Control and regulate pedestrian and vehicular traffic in a safe, orderly, and respectful manner, as required.
• Operate and maintain security vehicles in accordance with regulatory compliance and policies.
• Operate and maintain all security and facility equipment in accordance with facility guidelines and/or security policies.
• Write and maintain comprehensive incident reports and daily activity logs in accordance with CSHL policies and procedures to document events.
• Report all fire and safety hazards and enforce parking policy; escort CSHL employees, students, residents, and guests after business hours, as required.
• Assist Office of Security personnel in the performance of their duties, as required.
• Perform other security‑related duties and tasks as assigned by the Director, Safety and Security, and/or the Assistant Director of Security.

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent

Experience: 2+ years in a private security professional role or present/former law enforcement officer

Current license to practice as a Security Guard in New York State and/or active New York State peace officer.

Valid Driver’s License.

Certified in Basic Life Support (CPR/AED) and First Aid by the American Red Cross.
