The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health by providing water services and enforcing environmental standards. The Bureau of Water Supply (BWS) manages New York City's upstate water supply system and related facilities, and supports the overall Water Protection Program. The intern will work in the Quality Assurance Division of the Drinking Water Operations Directorate, participating in water quality monitoring and field support in the Catskill Watershed with Kingston Field Operations.
The internship location is Kingston, NY, with limited access to mass transit. Some field work and office work may be required. The intern will adhere to all environmental, health and safety laws, Agency policies, rules, and regulations. A final presentation will be developed for the Interns Closing Ceremony.
The internship title is valid for the duration of the program (June–August each year).
Responsibilities- Perform sample collection and field analysis for water quality monitoring.
- Conduct inventory in the laboratory and assist with field sampling, sample run preparation, and bottle preparation/packing.
- Assist with equipment and instrument maintenance and data entry.
- Manage data, update standard operating procedures, and provide general field support as needed.
- Occasionally work in an office setting with some field activities required.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety laws, Agency policies, rules, and regulations.
- Minimum Qualifications
:
As of June of the Program year, the intern must be a student matriculated in college or a recent graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year). - Preferred Skills
:- Undergraduate coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or ecology.
- Comfort working from a small boat at times; basic MS Office skills, including spreadsheets and handling large data sets.
- Strong writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Leadership, self-motivation, ability to work independently with limited supervision, and willingness to learn.
- GPA of at least 2.5 (4.0 scale).
