SLS is seeking a Long Island-based Specification Sales Representative
. This representative will develop and maintain relationships with key Long Island area specifiers (architects, interior designers, and/or engineers), as well as certain clients in Manhattan, while growing market share and building new accounts for SLS.
The ideal candidate will understand the project dynamics of commercial architecture and construction, learn technical information, be self-motivated, and well-spoken. Presentation skills are key. A background in lighting sales is ideal but not required. SLS will train the right person looking to segue from architecture/design to sales.
This role is based in both Long Island and New York City and requires travel within the region, with occasional travel outside the region for factory visits.
Role & Responsibilities- Responsible for lighting specifications through developing relationships with specifiers and manufacturers.
- Understand (or learn) the lighting industry, product and market trends.
- Create and maintain strong relationships with relevant parties, companies, institutions, and people.
- Achieve annual and quarterly targets assigned by the agency.
- Identify and generate new opportunities to build the SLS portfolio.
- Showcase new products to the market, confidently presenting new products and highlighting their features and benefits.
- Build strong internal relationships with SLS project management, quotes, and sales team.
- Determine customer product needs in the field and align them with existing products and new products under development.
- Target and contact key architects, engineers, lighting designers, etc., and develop positive relationships to secure specifications and sales.
- Regularly report on key accomplishments and monitor key metrics to identify areas for improvement.
- Maintain customer and prospect data including contacts, status of outstanding commitments, meeting notes, etc.
- Required:
an undergraduate degree in a related field (architecture, design, engineering) or equivalent relevant work experience in design, construction or design sales. Examples: architect, lighting designer, commercial interior designer, regional sales manager for a lighting brand, or specification sales agent. - Preferred experience level: 2–12 years in a relevant role in the industry.
- Highly motivated and target-driven with a proven track record in sales or project-related work.
- Demonstrated understanding of various aspects of the architectural lighting industry.
- Comfortable with public speaking for presentations and professional command of oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities and business relationships.

- Compensation in the range of $50K–$80K+, dependent on experience, with potential to exceed this range with commissions.
