Job Description #
** Position Summary
** Invasive species technicians (1; potentially
2) are needed to assist with early detection rapid response (EDRR) and treatment efforts on priority invasive plant species on Fort Drum, New York. Treatments will mainly be chemical, however some mechanical, manual, and biological treatments will be applied when possible.

Position duration is approximately beginning of June through end of August. Longer date may be available based on funding. Start and end dates are flexible. Applicants should expect to work 80 hours over a two-week pay period in person at Fort Drum. Housing is not provided. Incumbents will be employed by Colorado State University’s Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CSU CEMML).##

** Organization: CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship.

Fort Drum, New York.  Fort Drum is a United States Army installation 10 miles northeast of Watertown, New York and in close proximity to Canada, the Thousand Islands, and the Adirondack Park.#

Job Duties
*** Navigate to, survey and map invasive plant populations with a GPS unit. This requires technicians to assign percent infestion to populations. (25%)
* Treat invasive plant infestations using chemical, mechanical, manual, and biological methods. Properly preparing, transporting, using, and maintaining backpack and UTV sprayers along with accurately recording treatment data is required. (75%)#

** Supervision
* * No supervisory duties are required for this position. Technicians will work in the field with a crew leader to carry out assigned duties.#
** Minimum Qualifications
*** High school diploma or GED
* Ability to work in-person at Fort Drum, NY
* Valid driver’s license is required.
* Applicants must be willing to become a New York State Certified Pesticide Technician through the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
* Ability to work extended periods of time in all types of weather and habitat conditions.
* Ability to carry a 4-gallon backpack sprayer (around 30-35 pounds) on a regular basis for long hours.
* Applicants must be able to cut invasive species while wearing a harness with a 20-pound brush saw.#
** Preferred Qualifications
*** A BS/BA degree in biology, ecology, natural sciences or a related field and/or vegetation identification or botanical fieldwork
* Knowledge of plant species known to grow in the Fort Drum, NY area
* Ability to identify plants
* Ability to use a map and compass
* A working knowledge of Global Positioning Systems (GPS)#
