Overview
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Located on Long Island, NY, Brookhaven Lab operates world-class facilities and expertise across basic and applied science. The Laboratory conducts research in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and related technologies, with collaboration from researchers worldwide.
Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates (a collaboration between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University) and supports approximately 3,000 scientists, engineers, and staff, with thousands of visiting researchers each year.
Organization OverviewWithin the Energy & Photon Sciences (EPS) Directorate and as part of the Co-design Centre for Quantum Advantage (C2QA), the Lab accelerates advances in Quantum Information Science (QIS).NSLS-II provides a state-of-the-art 3 GeV electron storage ring and an array of beamlines enabling X-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared investigations across materials science and related disciplines.
Position DescriptionAs a member of the Materials Thrust in C2QA, the successful applicant will conduct synchrotron-based experiments at NSLS-II to characterize, design, and advance materials used in qubit fabrication. The candidate will collaborate with researchers at NSLS-II, CFN, and partner institutions to study microscopic interactions and correlate chemical, electronic, and structural variations with qubit efficiency and stability using synchrotron-based spectroscopy and diffraction techniques.
Examples of related work include recent studies highlighted by the department and ongoing projects under publication consideration.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Spearhead a focused effort to enable cutting-edge synchrotron science to advance QIS materials.
- Develop methods to collect and analyze XPS, XAS, XRD, and XRR data and relate these measurements to qubit performance to build structure–property relationships.
- Explore coherent X-ray scattering techniques to address QIS problems.
- Collaborate with researchers across chemistry, energy, and quantum materials, within BNL and externally.
- Publish and present results to the scientific community.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- PhD in Physical Sciences (Physics/Chemistry), Materials Science, or related field.
- Experience in synchrotron spectroscopy and diffraction/scattering techniques.
- Experience with Python programming for code development, modeling, and fitting.
- Proven record of scientific contributions through publications and talks.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse, discipline-spanning team.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience in two or more of the following:
- Experience with X-ray spectroscopy (XPS and/or XAS).
- Experience with X-ray Reflectivity (XRR) and/or surface diffraction.
- Experience with X-ray Diffraction (XRD), including powder and single-crystal
- Methods to collate data from multiple techniques to gain insights into materials.
- Knowledge in materials science, solid-state chemistry, or nanoscience.
- Knowledge or experience with X-ray Resonant Scattering or coherent techniques.
- Occasional travel (approximately 5%).
- Competitive compensation. Salary range: $78,000 – $100,000 per year; placement and salary based on experience and qualifications.
- Policy regarding post-PhD experience limits for research associate appointments (as described by Brookhaven policies).
- Brookhaven provides a supportive environment and resources to enable success.
Brookhaven requires all non-badged personnel, including visitors, to provide REAL- REAL--compliant documentation to access the site. More information is available at the official site; non-compliance will restrict site access, including interviews.
