Regulatory Compliance Specialist, Quality Engineering
Location: New York
The Product Safety & Compliance Lead (North America) is the sole U.S. (NY-based) corporate owner of product safety, QA compliance alignment, and regulatory risk mitigation across all products sold to North American customers. This role serves as the functional lead and technical expert, ensuring products meet applicable regulations and major retailer requirements while partnering closely with Product Development/Engineering, Asia Quality, and Customer Service.
Full-time role with minimal travel (up to ~10% to Asia as needed).
Key ResponsibilitiesRegulatory & Retailer Compliance Ownership
- Serve as the primary company point of contact for North American regulatory bodies, market access requirements, and retailer QA standards (e.g., Walmart, Amazon, Target, Costco).
- Interpret and translate regulations and retailer requirements into clear actions, test plans, and execution steps for internal stakeholders and Asia partners.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable standards and ensure timely implementation across product lines.
Product Safety Strategy & Risk Mitigation
- Lead proactive product safety risk identification, escalation, and mitigation across the product lifecycle.
- Recommend and drive design, material, labeling, packaging, or process changes to ensure compliance and reduce safety risk.
- Support investigation and resolution of safety-related issues with structured root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive action (CAPA).
Cross-Functional Partnership:
Product Development & Engineering
- Partner with Product Development/Engineering to define safety and compliance requirements for new products from concept through commercialization.
- Collaborate with Asia Quality to ensure requirements are understood, implemented, and validated at supplier/factory level.
- Ensure that product “special features” and consumer-facing innovations are clearly communicated to quality teams and suppliers to avoid execution gaps.
Quality Performance & Metrics Management
- Drive alignment between quality outcomes and business goals by defining and tracking key KPIs (e.g., defect rates, audit scores, test pass rates, issue trends).
- Establish reporting cadence and dashboards to communicate performance, risks, and priorities to internal stakeholders.
- Identify systemic issues and lead structured improvement plans with Asia Quality and cross-functional partners.
- Partner with Customer Service to own consumer complaints and feedback related to safety, compliance, and product quality.
- Lead investigation workflows, trend analysis, and corrective/preventive actions to reduce repeat issues.
- Support retailer escalations and documentation needs as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, or a related discipline (required).
- Certifications strongly preferred:
ASQ CQE or equivalent. - Demonstrated working expertise in CPSIA and related toy/consumer product safety requirements (EN71 knowledge strongly preferred).
- 7+ years in product safety, QA, and/or compliance within consumer products (toys/game preferred).
- Proven experience supporting North American market requirements and retailer compliance expectations.
- Strong background working cross-functionally and with overseas sourcing/quality teams (Asia supplier environment preferred).
- Strong regulatory interpretation and technical analysis skills; able to translate complex requirements into actionable steps.
- Excellent stakeholder communication and influence; comfortable working across time zones and functions.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and effective at managing multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
- High ownership mindset with sound judgment in risk identification and escalation.
