Salary transparency statement This is a temporary, hourly, non-exempt, non-benefited position. The position will be for 15 - 37.50 hours per week with an anticipated hiring rate of $22-$28/hour commensurate with experience.
Position SummaryThe Temporary Property Management Assistant will assist the Manager of Field Research and Outdoor Programs with the maintenance of the Cary Institute trails, access roads, Fern Glen Display and forest lands. The individual will assist with public environmental education and interpretive efforts. Qualified candidates must work independently and with others to perform duties. The position is anticipated to be offered annually March through August depending on funding availability.
- Basic maintenance of hiking trails, foot bridges, unpaved roads and forested landscapes
- Safely operate hand tools and power equipment including pruning shears, shovels, wheelbarrows, blowers, string and hedge trimmers, chain saw and others as needed.
- Install, maintain and monitor native plant materials
- Monitor and manage invasive species using manual, mechanical, and chemical practices
- Maintain interpretive signs, kiosks and outdoor educational features
- Assist with on-site public education programs
- Interact with and provide guidance to volunteers and visitors on the grounds
- Maintain accurate record-keeping of activities and observations
- Perform other assigned duties
- High school diploma, or its equivalent.
- Training in biology, conservation, horticultural sciences or related field.
- Working knowledge and experience with trail and landscape management preferred.
- High level of organization and attention to detail
- Competence with computers (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, cloud computing, etc.)
- Local travel in Dutchess County. No overnight travel.
- Able to work outside in all types of weather and temperatures, around insects, ticks and poison ivy
- Stand/walk for the majority of the work day
- Lift/move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Activities will involve the use of hand and power tools, usually outside, and sometimes in inclement weather. Working conditions may include moderate temperature extremes and around insects, plants and wildlife. Safety training will be provided.
