North Shore Animal League America offers an externship for students in their third and fourth years of veterinary college. As the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue organization, NSALA provides diverse experiences in sheltering, medical, and surgical management of diseases.
The Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center, established in 1992, treats dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. We aim to provide high-quality medicine to shelter and community pets. Annually, over 150 animals are hospitalized, and more than 20,000 pets are examined and treated.
Our medical services include vaccinations, complex medical case management, pediatric and neonatal medicine, infectious disease control, spay/neuter surgeries, and soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries. Our state-of-the-art facility features digital radiography, ultrasound, dental suite, and endoscopy.
The externship lasts two or four weeks, focusing on sheltering rescued pets, treatment, and surgeries. Students can work in shelters, medical wards, outpatient clinics, and observe or participate in surgeries.
Responsibilities- Work 40 hours per week, including one weekend shift.
- Participate in medical examinations and treatments.
- Work alongside staff veterinarians with hospitalized patients.
