Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Nurse Manager, Pediatric ICU, Evening Shift.

In this role, the successful candidate provides clinical leadership and management for a designated shift for a patient care unit, consistent with the philosophy and goals of the institution and department of nursing. The Assistant Nurse Manager assists the Nurse Manager in developing and sustaining an environment of excellence in patient/family service, growth and development of staff, and in applying evidence‑based practice to improve patient care.

  • Serves as a role model and resource for staff; manages employees through professional growth and development, mentoring, coaching, counseling, and progressive discipline.
  • Monitors staff attendance, ensures appropriate staffing and skill mix, and promotes fiscal responsibility.
  • Coordinates care delivery and staff assignments based on identified patient needs and clinical competency.
  • Assists with scheduling, payroll, and integration of services across the care continuum.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed to support unit operations.
  • Provides leadership support to other unit(s) in the service.
  • Holds self and others accountable for exemplary, cost‑efficient care delivery.
  • Assists with maintaining accreditation, regulatory standards, service standards, and policies at all organizational levels.
  • Communicates with clarity and integrity to build trust with all stakeholders.
  • Reports significant patient care issues, family concerns, safety, risk management concerns, and critical events to on‑duty leadership in a timely manner.
  • Communicates regularly with the Nurse Manager about patient safety, clinical practice, staff performance, and participates in the implementation of unit initiatives.
  • Participates in drafting nursing and organizational policies, engaging front‑line staff and incorporating shared governance principles.
  • Supports data collection with the Nurse Manager and interprofessional team; analyzes and utilizes data to drive practice changes that integrate quality, safety, patient experience, and productivity.
  • Assists leadership in maintaining staff licenses, certifications, and mandated learning content.
  • Fosters high‑reliability concepts within the unit/organizational structure.
  • Promotes a culture of inquiry, innovation, and transformation with a focus on the future.
  • Encourages staff involvement in nursing research, quality improvement, and evidence‑based practice efforts.
  • Leads and supports development of new insights to complex situations, innovative designs, and processes.
  • Exercises independent judgment in disciplinary actions, evaluation of staff, approval of time‑off requests, assignment of work, and participation in hiring decisions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current Registered Professional Nurse licensure in New York State.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
  • At least 2 years of nursing experience.
  • Certification in nursing leadership required upon eligibility.
  • Ability to apply the nursing process toward achievement of specific outcomes in an organized fashion to address patient/family satisfaction and quality indicators.
