Job OverviewHarlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. It provides a wide range of medical and family support services to residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. Duties & Responsibilities- Coordinate all patient care and operational activities in the department.
- Adhere to dress code, complete annual education requirements, maintain patient confidentiality, and report to work on time.
- Wear hospital on duty and comply with regulatory requirements.
- Represent the organization professionally and promote our mission, vision, values, ethics, and goals.
- Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. Attend regular staff meetings and in‑services.
- Provide patient care management/unit operations, including responding to concerns from patients and families, using discretion on special requests, and collaborating with leadership to improve patient care.
- Monitor employee performance related to patient care and nursing practice, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
- Provide support, guidance, and feedback to staff, including documented performance feedback and corrective actions.
- Facilitate staff participation in professional development activities.
- Identify and communicate staff educational needs to the Education Director.
- Act as a change agent and assure a safe working environment.
- Assist in preparing and implementing departmental goals.
- Maintain current nursing knowledge through continuing education.
- Practice and promote safety and infection control procedures and intervene in unsafe situations.
- Assist physicians in admission criteria and assessment of patient status.
- Make frequent rounds to assess status, adjust staffing, and evaluate staffing plans.
- Collaborate with peers and nurse managers to improve patient experience.
- Review quality improvement data and monitor effectiveness of action plans.
- Assist staff to utilize staffing resources to meet patient care and professional responsibilities.
- Respond to medical emergencies to provide leadership support.
- Serve as resource for resolving administrative and operational problems.
- Monitor compliance with regulatory and departmental policies.
- Participate in development and implementation of hospital‑wide and departmental policies.
- Engage in continuous performance improvement and professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; plus either:
- A Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, or equivalent and at least six years of nursing experience with at least four years in a supervisory, teaching, or administrative capacity;
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and at least seven years of nursing experience, with five years in a supervisory or teaching capacity;
- A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
