The program begins on Monday June 1, 2026 and requires full time work through Friday August 7, 2026. While candidates may express preferences for areas of interest, hires will be made based on unit needs. Two clinical references are required before an offer is extended. We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a 2026 Student Nurse Extern at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. In this role, the successful candidate performs patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and assignment by the professional registered nurse. The extern works closely with the professional nurse to determine patient needs, implement care activities, and report patient/family responses.

The extern carries out patient assignments under the direct supervision of the registered nurse with a comprehensive approach to achieve specific outcomes. Reports to the RN on specific functions completed, observes the RN in the performance of professional nursing care.

• Participates in unit-based quality initiatives under the guidance of a registered professional nurse.
• Demonstrates understanding of the rationale and basic principles of assigned patient s treatment/care procedures.
• Provides for hygiene, safety, and comfort needs of assigned patients.
• Utilizes nursing interventions to prevent complications of bed rest and immobility.
• Provides assistance to patients with activities of daily living and encourages appropriate self-care.
• Incorporates infection prevention/control guidelines and risk management in patient care.
• Measures vital signs.
• Applies clean dressings.
• Performs intake and output.
• Provides oral suctioning and mouth care.
• Utilizes the written patient care plan/clinical pathway to deliver patient care.
• Demonstrates basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care by identifying physical, psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, religious, and development needs, and adapting interventions accordingly.
• Observes the nursing process: assessment, documentation, planning, interventions, and evaluation under the direction of the registered nurse.
• Observes and reports changes in the patient s condition and environment to the registered nurse.
• Supports patient privacy and confidentiality.
• Communicates support and responsiveness to patients, families, and staff, both verbally and non-verbally.
• With additional training and demonstrated competency, may perform the following clinical functions: obtain 12-lead EKGs and use a glucometer.
• Participates in planning and evaluation of nursing care through active participation in conferences.
• Observes and reports patient/family responses, changes in condition, and results of procedures to the designated RN; completes written documentation with co-signature by the supervising RN.
• Cooperates with and interacts with interdisciplinary team members when carrying out patient care.
• Demonstrates knowledge of NYULH Service Standards and incorporates them into duties.
• Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
• Participates in classroom or unit-based educational activities and patient teaching.
• Seeks learning resources for identified learning needs and recognizes own limitations, requesting assistance when needed.

Completion of a minimum of one clinical semester with a medical/surgical focus in a BSN program; acceptable transcript; minimum GPA of 3.5 preferred. Successful completion of a written screening questionnaire;
Certification in BLS. Demonstrates physical stamina, manual dexterity, and visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities.

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) Cert
