What you'll doThe VP Chief Development Officer is responsible for a comprehensive philanthropy strategy aligned with the mission of Bassett Healthcare Network (BHN The CDO understands how philanthropy is a mission-advancing function and supports priorities for patient care, research, education and community health. The CDO leads these efforts through Friends of Bassett Foundation which provides overall management and coordination of philanthropy across the entire Bassett Healthcare Network (BHN).
In this capacity, the CDO will have specific accountability in the areas of major gifts, planned gifts, annual giving, grateful patient philanthropy, corporate and foundation funding, and special fundraising events. The CDO staffs and supports the Friends of Bassett Board to recruit, develop and train FOB board members in cultivation and stewardship.
This position is eligible for the Bassett Healthcare Leadership Incentive Plan.
Essential Job Functions
- Develop and execute a philanthropy strategy aligned with Bassett Healthcare Network’s priorities for patient care, research, education and community health. Position philanthropy as a function that helps Bassett advance its mission not simply a revenue activity.
- Lead all fundraising programs including major gifts, planned giving, annual giving, grateful patient philanthropy, special events, and capital campaigns.
- Personally manage a portfolio of high-capacity donors and prospects (30 to 50)
- Serve as a key advisor to Bassett executive leadership and the Friends of Bassett Board on philanthropic opportunities and trends.
- Ensure Friends of Bassett Board members are engaged in work supporting donor cultivation and stewardship. Organize quarterly board meetings, and recruit and develop new members as philanthropic leaders.
- Build strong relationships with physicians, clinicians and other key leaders to learn more about organizational priorities and align them with philanthropic support.
- Ensure all philanthropic activities comply with applicable privacy laws and ethical standards.
- Oversee donor stewardship, impact reporting and recognition to build trust through accountability.
- Lead and mentor a high performing FOB team by creating an environment of collaboration, transparency, and accountability.
- Establish and track priorities for the department’s annual operating budget and oversee other operational functions such as the CRM.
- Represent Bassett at public and private functions interacting with donors, prospects and professional advisors for the purpose of building relations.
- 4 year/bachelor's degree in business, nonprofit management, communications, organizational leadership degrees would be applicable. Other degrees with applicable experience would be acceptable.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in progressive leadership in philanthropy preferably in healthcare or other complex nonprofit organizations. Demonstrated success in securing major gifts. Experience should also include events management, planned gifts, operations and finance.
- Experience working with boards, senior executives and clinical leaders. Experience leading a capital campaign is also a plus.
