Housing Community Organizer

The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition (NWBCCC) is a 51-year old grassroots, member‑led community‑based organization rooted in the Bronx. We unite diverse people and institutions to work for racial justice and economic democracy through intergenerational community organizing that transforms the Bronx and beyond. NWBCCC uses direct action organizing, leadership development and coalition building to advance housing justice, health justice, immigrant rights and equitable community and economic development.

Housing justice is at the center of our work. We organize alongside tenants to win safe, healthy, affordable homes; hold negligent and predatory landlords accountable; and advance anti‑displacement strategies that keep Bronx residents in their communities. We also organize for long‑term solutions that expand community ownership and permanent affordability, including tenant‑led stabilization and community ownership pathways such as community land trusts and tenant acquisition strategies.

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Housing Community Organizer who is excited about field‑based, relationship‑driven organizing.

This is a hands‑on, field‑based organizing role focused on building tenant power. You will spend a significant portion of your time in the field, including buildings and neighborhoods, doing the core work of organizing: door knocking, building outreach, and in‑person one‑on‑one conversations with tenants, followed by consistent follow‑up that builds trust, develops leaders, and grows strong tenant associations and portfolio‑wide campaigns.

Job

Responsibilities Include:

Base Building & Field Organizing (Core)
  • Conduct regular door knocking and building outreach to identify tenants, assess issues and recruit participation
  • Hold consistent in‑person one‑on‑one conversations to build relationships (at least 20 monthly), identify leaders, and move tenants into action
  • Maintain systems for follow‑up (text/calls/return visits) to strengthen participation and turnout.
  • Support tenants to form and sustain tenant associations, run effective meetings, and develop building campaign strategies to address repairs/conditions, harassment, rent overcharges, and displacement pressure
  • Coach tenant leaders through one‑on‑ones, reflection, skill‑building, and shared planning
  • Facilitate or co‑facilitate meetings, workshops and trainings
  • Mobilize tenants for building actions including rallies, hearings, negotiations and demonstrations, when escalation is needed
  • Track organizing progress and outcomes (Contacts, one‑one‑ones, meetings, leaders developed, wins, etc)
Policy Campaigns and Leadership Development
  • Develop tenant leaders to participate in and help lead NWBCCC’s housing justice policy agenda
  • Build a leadership pipeline from building‑level issues to committee participation to campaign involvement to public leadership, supporting tenants to take on increasing responsibility over time
  • Prepare tenant leaders for public action and policy advocacy including testimony prep for hearings, meeting prep with elected officials, story development, and more
  • Mobilize and support tenants to participate in campaign activities, including turn‑out for rallies, press events, hearings, lobby days, coalition actions, and strategic meetings
  • Coordinate with NWBCCC staff and partners to align building organizing with broader campaign goals, timelines and escalation plans
  • Track and report campaign participation outcomes (Leaders developed, meetings attended, testimony delivered, actions mobilized, etc)
Required Skills and Capacities
  • At least 1 year of community organizing experience (tenant organizing strongly preferred)
  • Bilingual Spanish/English (spoken and written)
  • Strong relationship‑building skills and comfort working across diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Ability to facilitate groups, support conflict navigation, and move teams toward shared action
  • Strong time management and follow‑through; comfortable juggling building level work and campaign work
  • Commitment to housing justice, racial justice and economic democracy and alignment with member‑led organizing
  • Familiarity with the Bronx…
