Position: Peer Outreach Worker

Reports to: Program Director

Locations: NYC/City Wide (Mobile Van) - Positions based between Harlem & Brooklyn. Must be flexible with travel.

Hours: 35 hours/week, Non-Exempt

Salary: $43,000 - $48,000 annually, based on relevant experience.

Major Duties:

  • Conduct street outreach to identify homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth and young adults in NYC's five boroughs, preferably in teams of two.
  • Build rapport with youth and young adults using engagement techniques.
  • Provide age-appropriate interactions and adhere to agency guidelines and ethics.
  • Screen for basic needs; provide resources, referrals, shelter, and drop-in center information.
  • Offer crisis intervention and psychoeducation on various topics.
  • Establish networks with other outreach workers and local drop-in centers.
  • Assist in locating safe housing options—emergency, transitional, and permanent.
  • Maintain documentation of contacts, efforts, and events.
  • Respond to Fair Hearing requests.
  • Attend staff meetings and other internal/external meetings as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience working with homeless or runaway youth/young adults; street outreach experience preferred.
  • Lived experience related to homelessness or housing insecurity is a plus.
  • Ability to establish supportive relationships with participants.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to use public transportation across NYC.
  • Commitment to youth development and strength-based approaches.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office and database systems.
