Position Summary

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) is dedicated to soliciting the private funding necessary to support the strategic goals of the University in teaching, learning, and research. The personnel of UDAR work university-wide as well as within individual schools and colleges of the University to discover, motivate, cultivate, solicit, and steward alumni, parents, faculty, and friends for immediate, long-range, and future financial support, through gifts and pledges to the University, for critical operations such as student aid, faculty support, academic and research program development, and facilities and infrastructure.

UDAR's endeavors raise funds for immediate University use and also for the University's endowment.

The Assistant Vice President, Development, Principal Gifts and Campaign Initiatives is responsible for raising transformational gifts for NYU, building expertise in principal gift fundraising within the Development Team, and tracking the top principal gift level donors for NYU’s campaign. Develop comprehensive donor strategies that can be shared with NYU leadership on the top campaign prospects and will carry a portfolio of approximately 50 principal gift level ($10M+) prospects with a focus on high net worth non-alumni.

Create goals and tracks progress against them for principal gift fundraising in the campaign, for their portfolio, and is responsible for advancing principal gift activity through collaborative work with other fundraisers. Partner on planning for NYU’s campaign and representing university-wide needs and priorities in the campaign.

The annual fundraising goal for this position will be scaled over time with the goal of $25M per year as an annual baseline. Specific responsibilities include developing comprehensive strategies for the top campaign prospects in partnership with the SVP of UDAR, the VP of Campaigns, VP of Development, and the AVP’s in UDAR. Develop a robust portfolio of non-alumni principal gift prospects from existing research and identify new prospects through proactive research of how NYU’s programs align with the priorities for high net worth philanthropists.

Cultivate fundraising volunteers who can support principal gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Partner closely with the Associate Director of Special Stewardship to develop engagement plans for NYU’s most important philanthropists that inspire continued support. Partner with fundraising colleagues across NYU to advance and develop relationships with philanthropists that will inspire the greatest gift for the University. Focus primarily on the domestic philanthropic market and travel as needed.

Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Education: Master's Degree

Required Experience: 10+ years of progressively responsible development experience with specific experience soliciting and closing seven and eight figure gifts with high net worth non-alumni philanthropists. Must include experience in a major University or similar complex non-profit setting with strong face-to-face donor solicitation experience; proven track record of fundraising success.

Preferred Experience: 15+ years in higher education working closely with academic leaders and aligning development work with academic goals and fundraising priorities. Verifiable accomplishment record of $50M-plus, personally attributable charitable gifts closed.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Demonstrated problem solving skills, including the ability to understand the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the development and delivery of effective presentations. Excellent judgment, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system.
