Job Description

As a key member of The Community Builders’ Fund Development team, the Major Gift Officer (MGO) will design, implement, and manage a comprehensive major gifts program that expands philanthropic support for The Community Builders’ mission. This newly created role represents a long-term strategic investment in growing individual giving and will help build the systems, relationships, and structures needed to significantly increase donor revenue.

The MGO will manage a portfolio of major donor prospects, cultivate new relationships, and deepen engagement with existing supporters. The position will work closely with TCB leadership, including the President/CEO, Senior Vice President of Communications and Fund Development and Senior Vice President of Community Life, regional development committees, and senior staff to advance fundraising goals and elevate donor engagement. The ideal candidate is a relationship-centered, strategic fundraiser excited to build and expand a major gifts program within a respected national nonprofit.

This is a hybrid position with 5-10% travel required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Major Gifts Strategy & Program Development

  • Develop and implement a major gifts strategy aligned with organizational priorities and Fund Development goals.
  • Establish a structured moves-management system to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors.
  • Contribute to annual revenue goals, tracking processes, and donor engagement plans in consultation with the VP of Fund Development.
  • Identify opportunities over time to expand the major donor program across TCB’s multi-state footprint.
  • Help advance an organization-wide shift toward donor engagement by modeling best practices and equipping staff and leaders to participate effectively.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 50 - 75 major donor prospects.
  • Conduct regular donor meetings, cultivation conversations, and personalized stewardship activities.
  • Leverage CRM and wealth-screening tools to identify new prospects, evaluate donor capacity, and track movement.

Leadership & Board Partnership

  • Support the President/CEO, S/VPs, and senior leaders in executing donor cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Act as the relationship “quarterback” by coordinating research, organizing strategic meetings for TCB leadership, and managing follow-up to ensure clear next steps.
  • Provide guidance, strategy recommendations, briefing materials, and follow-up support for leadership led fundraising activities.
  • Collaborate with regional development committee in New York City, and other markets to strengthen networks and generate new introductions.

Cultivation & Stewardship Activities

  • Plan and implement strategic cultivation and stewardship events, including small gatherings, salons, and site-based visits.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop compelling donor-facing materials, updates, and communications.
  • Maintain timely stewardship practices that encourage renewed and increased giving.

Internal Collaboration & Reporting

  • Produce donor analyses, revenue forecasts, and regular portfolio reports for leadership.
  • Partner with Community Life, Real Estate Development, Accounting, and Communications teams to surface program stories and data that support donor engagement and target.
