HR Manager
Overview
Location:
New York City, NY or Boston, MA (flexible hybrid). Counsel Health is seeking a founding Director of People & Operations to build our human resources and internal operational infrastructure from 0 to 1. We are looking for a rare hybrid: a strategic leader who can design a long-term people strategy, and a relentless operator who can manage the "nitty-gritty" of physician licensing and 1099 onboarding.
You will be the primary architect of our corporate culture, compliance frameworks, and clinician-facing operations, ensuring internal systems remain robust as we scale and the care we provide remains high quality.
- Own and run core People Operations activities, including payroll processing and HRIS management.
- Serve as a first-line point of contact for employees, handling complex employee situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.
- Build, document, and continuously improve People processes to ensure consistency, compliance, and a great employee experience as the company scales.
- Partner with team leadership to design and execute people programs, including performance processes, manager enablement, and employee experience initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with employment laws and internal policies; establish HR policies, handbooks, and compliance protocols for a distributed, multi-state workforce.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, and leaders across the company on people-related initiatives.
- Partner with Clinician Ops and Talent Leadership to ensure a seamless candidate-to-employee transition and optimized onboarding.
- Audit existing workflows to identify gaps and build systems to address them.
- 8-10+ years in HR/People Operations, with a proven track record of building departments from scratch in a startup environment.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and scale a team from around 20 to 150+ employees/clinicians, ideally more than once.
- Professional and empathetic communication, with excellent written and verbal skills.
- Extremely detail-oriented with a strong focus on licensing and compliance, accuracy, and follow-through.
- Experience with AI-powered tools and modern HR technology (ideally Rippling) to improve efficiency and workflows.
- Familiarity with health-tech nuances, clinician contracting (1099 vs. W2), and the regulatory landscape of digital health.
- Impact:
Contribute to groundbreaking, AI-driven healthcare experiences and engage with executives at leading tech and healthcare organizations. - Growth:
Broad ownership and professional development within a rapidly scaling startup. - Compensation:
Competitive salary + equity. - Benefits:
Comprehensive healthcare, vision, dental, 401K, unlimited PTO, and parental leave.
- Patients come first. We are clinicians first, technologists second, with patient trust and safety at the center of every decision.
- Innovate with optimism. Build the future of care from first principles and challenge the status quo when needed.
- Right answer wins. Debate openly and choose the strongest path; we win and lose as a team.
- Simplicity over complexity. Favor clear, elegant solutions that serve patients and the team.
- Do fewer things, well. Focus and pursue excellence in the core areas.
