Performs professional duties related to all lands, facilities, and real property on the Post and Brooklyn Campus. Duties relate to management and operation of the Physical Plant, campus construction and facilities planning. Responsible for the direction, supervision, coordination, and accomplishment of work. Major areas of responsibility include all operational areas of plant (auto / transportation, building and mechanical maintenance, custodial, grounds, utilities), plant administration, construction, long‑range planning, space allocation, safety, Central Stores, personnel management.
Position requires on‑call status whenever a problem arises. Position required to attend numerous university events.
- Responsibility in the areas of physical plant operations including administration, transportation, special services, building maintenance, custodial, grounds, campus utility distribution and Central Stores.
- Communicate regularly with the Chief of Administration about the needs and regulations and procedures for the effective operation of the buildings and the maintenance and custodial programs so that cooperative working relationships with building staff are encouraged and maintained.
- Specifies and/or participates in selection of major campus equipment such as mechanical, electrical, controls systems, etc.
- Participates in selection of architects, engineers and construction companies.
- Participates in design of new campus facilities, utility systems, streets, and landscape designs.
- Oversees operation of department’s facilities management system.
- May approve all personnel items for department, including reviewing leave requests, grievances, personnel requisitions, and other personnel‑related requests.
- Oversees all accounting aspects of Physical Plant.
- Performs the budgeting, planning and allocation of financial resources to each Physical Plant department on an annual basis and a projected future basis.
- Supervises all current Physical Plant projects and planning for future projects.
- Manages administrative portion of contracted work.
- Ensures annual performance evaluations are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Attend all necessary meetings with plant employees, contractors, other university personnel or agencies.
- Developing and implementing multi‑year comprehensive maintenance plans for the university, that is both corrective and preventive for the upkeep of all facilities, grounds, and the major facilities systems (HVAC, mechanical plumbing, electrical and structural) for the Brooklyn and Post campuses.
- Works with Chief of Administration, deans, department chairs, and senior administration regarding space allocation on campus.
- Assist in property acquisitions, including price negotiations, approvals, and actual purchases of various properties beneficial to the university.
- Oversee all accounting aspects of campus construction.
- Works with consulting architects and engineers.
- Works with contractors and construction managers.
- Coordinates and/or assists in special projects as needed.
- A bachelor’s degree in the areas of business or public administration, engineering, architecture or related area required or equivalent experience.
- Applicants must have a minimum of seven years’ experience.
- Experience in industrial‑level maintenance and construction with supervisory responsibilities preferred.
- Experience in university funding, finance, and accounting required; knowledge of University policies and procedures; understand principles of construction and mechanical/electrical operation of large facilities; be able to deal with a diverse workforce; be able to make decisions and accept responsibility for decisions that involve large amounts of money, and the health and safety of employees and other campus constituents; have excellent leadership and organization skills and the ability to motivate people;
