Meet Steve McAuliffe: Driving freight innovation at Qantas

Steve McAuliffe is the Manager Unit Load Devices (ULDs) within Freight and Network Operations at Qantas, bringing four decades of aviation experience with a strong focus on safety.

• Lead the management of more than 14,500 ULDs across the Qantas Group, covering 29 container types.
• Oversee the Group-wide transition to fire-resistant ULDs, with nearly 50% already upgraded; ensure safe handling and storage.
• Collaborate with flight crews, ground handling teams, and suppliers to optimize ULD operations and aircraft turnaround times.
• Drive a strong safety culture, including training, incident prevention, and continuous improvement across ULD operations.
• Maintain knowledge of industry developments (ULD design, testing, and regulatory requirements) to support safe and efficient operations.

• Joined Qantas in 1984 as a baggage handler and progressed through roles on the ramp, customer service, Aircraft Dispatch, Load Control, and Ramp Procedures.
• Helped launch new ports, including the Jetconnect operation in New Zealand.
• Worked with Airbus on the A380 cargo loading system and launched his own ground-handling consultancy while serving as a flying Loadmaster for international carriers.
