Position Overview

The Field Director will design, implement, and manage the campaign’s field strategy. The ideal candidate is an experienced organizer who can recruit, train, and inspire teams, operate in VAN at an advanced level, and manage a large cohort of staff, fellows, and volunteers. Experience in NYC is strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Field Strategy & Execution
  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive field plan for a high-density NYC district, including turf cutting, staging locations, GOTV operations, and apartment-building canvassing strategies.

  • Build and maintain metrics-driven voter contact programs (door-to-door, phone banks, texting).

  • Design systems for efficient entry, tracking, and analysis of field data.

Team Leadership & Management
  • Recruit, hire, train, and manage field organizers, deputy field organizers, fellows, canvassers, and volunteer leaders.

  • Establish a positive and supportive team culture that emphasizes accountability, inclusivity, and results.

  • Set weekly goals, evaluate performance, and provide coaching to ensure targets are met.

Volunteer Engagement
  • Build and maintain a strong volunteer pipeline through outreach, partnerships, and community engagement.

  • Lead volunteer onboarding, training, deployment, and retention efforts.

  • Create clear leadership pathways for volunteers and fellows.

Data & VAN Management
  • Oversee all field data operations and ensure accurate, timely reporting.

  • Possess advanced working knowledge of VAN, including building lists, creating universes, setting up events and scripts, managing user permissions, and producing actionable analytics.

  • Use data insights to adjust strategy, improve efficiency, and track progress toward vote goals.

Apartment-Building Canvassing Operations
  • Develop systems for efficiently canvassing large apartment buildings, co-ops, and high-rises.

  • Train staff and volunteers on best practices for accessing restricted buildings legally and professionally.

GOTV Leadership
  • Lead all phases of GOTV planning and execution, including staffing, staging, cutting turfs, and reporting.

  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements and campaign policies.

Qualifications

Required

  • 2–4+ years of campaign field experience, including at least one cycle in a leadership role.

  • Advanced knowledge of VAN/Vote Builder, including backend data management.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage, motivate, and grow large teams—staff, fellows, and volunteers.

  • Strong background in high-density canvassing, particularly apartment buildings and urban turf.

  • Proven experience meeting ambitious voter contact goals in a fast-paced environment.

  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and time-management skills.

  • Ability to work long, irregular hours—including evenings and weekends.

  • Commitment to electing progressive leaders and building inclusive organizing structures.

Preferred

  • Experience on New York City or other urban campaigns.

  • Familiarity with labor, community, and activist groups in NYC.

  • Experience with relational organizing and digital organizing tools.
