Job OverviewAt NYRA, the simultaneous operation of live racing, simulcasting, facilities construction, wagering activities, and arena functioning leads to a challenging environment from an accounting perspective. Financial information related to the above activities exists both inside and outside of the company’s general ledger system. This results in extensive reconciliation procedures and analyses in order to ensure completeness, accuracy and proper cutoff. In addition, it requires continuous efficiency efforts and automation activities to grow with the company.
The VP of Accounting is responsible for directing, coordinating, maintaining, and controlling the accounting systems that protect the assets of NYRA; monitors department policies and procedures and recommends improvements, consults with the senior management team, participates in establishing and implementing major goals and objectives and serves as a resource in all aspects of accounting; ensures integrity of internal and external recording and reporting of financial transactions;
oversees general ledger, accounts receivable, fixed asset management, etc.; oversees and controls collection of revenue; ensures that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory, and NYRA procedures.
Must be skilled at forging partnerships and establishing trust. Must have outstanding communication skills and a keen ability to convey complex technical concepts in easily understood terms to business stakeholders. Must be able to translate business needs into user requirements and innovative technology solutions that result in enhanced user experiences.
Directs Managers and/or senior individual contributors in a matrix environment and is accountable for meaningful career development conversations and regular coaching and feedback. Provides leadership through development, coaching and mentoring for improving performance and enhancing the company culture (e.g., NYRA’s mission, shared values and supporting behaviors). Address performance issues through the timely and effective use of the Corrective Action process.
Essential Functions- Develops and executes long-term accounting strategies to support business growth and financial sustainability.
- Leads high-level financial analysis and reporting to support executive decision‑making.
- Oversees the preparation of daily, monthly, annual and other periodic financial statements and reports.
- Ensures that financial and accounting statements, records, and reports and filings are accurate and timely. Provides useful and informative reports and data. Accurately conveys NYRA’s financial position.
- Ensures that accounting records and reports are in compliance with GAAP and government regulations. Reviews new accounting pronouncements for applicability and compliance. Cooperates with and assists external auditors as appropriate.
- Creates appropriate department policies and procedures and updates as needed. Ensures that policies are in accordance with evolving regulations, legal requirements and industry trends.
- Ensures that department functions are conducted in accordance with established principles, standards, and legal requirements; that Company assets are safeguarded and preserved; that Department personnel are effective and efficient; and that positive business relations exist with auditors, government officials, and trade professionals.
- Directs the implementation efforts of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Designs the overall system and procedural workflow to ensure efficient and accurate financial reporting data.
- Leads the standardization of financial procedures and oversees the automation of manual activities.
- Responsible for managing operational aspects of their teams (e.g., reporting, performance, talent development and compliance), as well as implementing workforce and succession plans to meet business needs.
