Job Description

The VP, Head of the Lovell Safety Management LLC, Workers’ Compensation Claims Team is a key executive leadership role responsible for the operational, strategic direction and effectiveness of the claim’s operation in the organization. The VP of Claims reports directly to the President. The VP of Claims partners with cross‑functional team leads in Underwriting/Sales, Safety, and HR to align claims goals with Company objectives.

The VP of Claims is charged with oversight of the workers’ compensation claims team including attorneys, licensed representatives, managers, supervisors, nurses, claims adjusters, field claims representatives and support staff. This position requires extensive experience in the New York State Workers’ Compensation Law and its rules and regulations. The successful candidate must have the capability to communicate effectively and work in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders including the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF), attorneys, Company executives, clients, adjusters, and the NYS Workers’ Compensation Board.

This position requires demonstrated leadership skills with excellence in claims management and customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the Workers’ Compensation Claim’s operations to ensure that claims are being properly administered and litigated in accordance with the New York State Workers’ Compensation Laws and its rules and regulations by NYSIF, the workers’ compensation carrier, outside counsels, and in-house personnel.
  • Develop and implement claims policies, procedures, and processes to align with Company goals.
  • Lead, supervise, mentor, evaluate performance, and motivate claims team to perform at a high level with competence in complex workers’ compensation matters.
  • Must have extensive and demonstrated NYS workers’ compensation experience with the ability to evaluate the merits of claims, develop defense strategies, determine and negotiate settlement parameters, conduct legal research, determine whether reserves are appropriate and whether appeals, Full Board Reviews and Appellate briefs should be filed. Handles all claims matters related to NYS workers’ compensation.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting/Sales, Safety and other internal departments to ensure profitability, client retention, and growth of Company.
  • Drive client retention through effective claims management and excellence in customer service.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with executive and management personnel at the NYSIF, brokers, executive committee members, attorneys, and the NYS Workers’ Compensation Board. The position requires consistent excellent customer service to both internal and external Lovell stakeholders.
  • Monitor emerging trends in claims administration, litigation management, and regulatory changes to inform continuous improvements and development of Company strategies.
  • Represents Lovell Safety Management, LLC at workers’ compensation professional organizations, meetings with NYSIF, Workers’ Compensation Board and clients as a subject matter expert in NYS Workers’ Compensation.
  • Required to write articles on workers’ compensation topics that will be published in professional outlets and develop Power Point presentations for NYSIF/client meetings.
Qualifications

Required Education, Experience & Licensing

  • 10+ years of extensive experience in management/litigation of NYS workers’ compensation claims.
  • Demonstrated success in a senior executive leadership role managing a large claims team in the administration of claims under the NY State Workers’ Compensation Law and its rules and regulations.
