Distinguishing Features of the Class
This is an assistant position to the Crew leader in the Department of Recreation, Forestry and Parks, involving light to medium physical effort and is often performed under adverse weather conditions. The employee may be required to work alone but usually works with other members of a crew and work assignments are reviewed while in progress and at their completion by the Crew leader.

Typical Work Activities

• Assist in the maintenance, development, and repairs of Lewis County recreational trails;
• Operate a truck, trailer, dump truck, excavator, loader, mowers, trimmer, chainsaws and other equipment or hand tools as needed to maintain and sign the trails;
• Maintain safety precautions in all work;
• Assist in the maintenance, transfer and light repair of trucks, equipment, and supplies;
• Complete reports and update records;
• Assist in routine maintenance of Lewis County owned parks including mow lawns, maintain water lines, trash pickup and disposal, supply replacement, cleaning facilities and fireplaces, stain repair and maintain picnic tables, fireplaces and signs and assist in maintenance requirements;
• Assist in marking of timber;
• All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years work experience in forestry, trails, parks or similar work involving construction logging or maintenance;
Special Necessary Requirements: Required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid CDL License as required by the New York State Department of Motor vehicles.

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics
Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and practices common to recreational trails, including but not limited to chain saws, ability to operate a truck, trailer, tractor, dump truck, excavator, loader, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws and other equipment or hand tools preferred, understand and carry out verbal and written instructions, ability to deal courteously and tactfully with coworkers and the public, physical condition commensurate with demands of position, knowledge of handheld GPS beneficial but not required.
