Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Job Summary
Under supervision, performs bench, general shop and outside machinist work aboard the vessels and terminals of the Staten Island Ferry; performs related work.
Responsibilities- Set up and operate machine shop equipment such as engine lathes, shapers, milling machines, drill presses and grinders.
- Use machinist tools and instruments to inspect, overhaul and repair all types of main and auxiliary stationary power plants, marine propulsion systems, and hydraulic steering systems on vessels and in terminals.
- Direct subordinates in the performance of various maintenance and repair tasks.
- Prepare reports and requisitions while maintaining records and inventories of supplies and materials.
- Perform tasks in accordance with American Bureau of Shipping and United States Coast Guard regulations.
- Operate a motor vehicle as needed.
- Walk to and from machines and tool storage areas; climb stairs and around objects; stand for extended periods while operating machine tool equipment.
- Read small numbers and markings for precision measurements; use sight and hearing to avoid injury from moving vehicles and rotating machine tool equipment.
- Listen to supervisor instructions and communicate orally in a noisy environment; walk over greasy concrete surfaces.
- Lift metal objects weighing up to 60 pounds; work in dusty, dark areas with traces of vehicle/engine exhaust gases and strong odors from grease, lubricants, and solvents.
- Five years of full‑time satisfactory experience as a machinist; or
- At least two and one‑half years of full‑time satisfactory experience as a machinist plus sufficient full‑time experience as a machinist helper or an apprentice machinist, or training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of five years of the required experience.
- Six months of acceptable experience credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience or approved training up to a maximum of two and one‑half years.
- Permanent in Title and must have applied for Machinist Exam No. 3079 or otherwise be eligible
. - Valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License, maintained for the duration of employment.
- Must pass a drug screening to be appointed; subject to random drug and alcohol testing during employment.
- Must obtain and maintain a TWIC within 30 days of appointment and for the duration of employment.
Experience in the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of marine propulsion engines (Caterpillar, Detroit, Cummings, and EMD diesel engines) rated at 1,000 horsepower or higher, including marine propulsion systems, hydraulic steering systems, shafting, bearings, steering gears and propeller systems.
Residency RequirementNew York City residency required within 90 days of appointment. City employees who have worked for the City for two continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.

1 Bay Street, Staten Island, NY 10301.
Hours/Shift: 40 hours per week, Monday‑Friday.
