Position Summary
The Council on Foreign Relations is seeking a temporary Building Engineer II or III (dependent upon experience) who will be responsible for managing the daily maintenance and repair of all building systems and equipment. This will include hands‑on maintenance and repair work on HVAC, boiler, heating, refrigeration, water, and energy systems, etc., and coordinating with external vendors.
This is a temporary full‑time position expected to last for three months. We will let this position know with as much advanced notice as possible if this position will be extended. The Building Engineer II/III will be expected to be on‑site five days per week, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, and will report to the Supervisor, Building Engineer.
EssentialFunctions/Responsibilities
- Maintain and support all HVAC (including cooling tower and pumps), heating plant system (boilers), plumbing, electrical, and lighting.
- Respond to all emergencies and mechanical systems throughout CFR, such as water leaks, power outages, etc..
- Ensure that all building systems (e.g. mechanical, electrical, BMS, etc.) are operated and maintained effectively and safely.
- Assist with emergency response management, including assisting with a response to medical emergencies and inclement weather occurrences, and building evacuation drills.
- Assist with snow removal as needed.
Experience
- Minimum of High School Diploma or GED equivalent strongly preferred
- A minimum of 7 years of related building operations and maintenance experience, preferably in a high‑profile, owner‑owned property of architectural significance
- Proven experience with the operation, maintenance and basic repair of HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems, including boilers, cooling towers, pumps and water/plumbing systems
- Strong proficiency in automatic temperature controls and building management systems
Related Skills & Other Requirements
- Professional and effective communication with team members and vendors
- Ability to stand/walk for long periods and lift and carry weights up to 70 pounds (i.e.
- packages, office furniture, etc.) - Ability to assist in snow removal, including treating sidewalks, shoveling, etc.

Compensation and Benefits- The full‑time hourly compensation range for this position is $45-60/hour, depending on experience.
- Due to the temporary and short‑term nature of this position (anticipated duration: 3 months), this position is not eligible for most employee benefits.
