Overview
The employee serves as a labor leader assigned to Maintenance Operations of the Gateway National Recreation Area.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Gateway National Recreation Area is May to November, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty:
May 2026.
- Maintain current knowledge, and answer questions from other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives, and ensure safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
- Check work while in progress and when finished to ensure instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
- Demonstrate proper work methods and work along with others to set a work pace.
- Ensure necessary plans, materials, supplies, equipment, and tools are available when needed.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver 's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator 's License and Driving Record. You must also submit all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver 's licenses.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- Occupancy of Government housing may be available.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement (06/14/2026) unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and whether the work was full-time or part-time. If part-time, hours must be annotated to prorate qualified experience.
The highest level of experience is based on the following example: leading a crew performing manual labor tasks with heavy power equipment, distributing and balancing workload, communicating assignments, and monitoring progress. You must be able to report progress to your supervisor and make recommendations on operations and problems. The following job-related factors apply:

Education: There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
