POSITION TITLE: Custodian (Full-time)

DEPARTMENT: Early Childhood

LOCATION(S): The Bronx

REPORTS TO: Center Director

SALARY RANGE: $39,088.90 - $43,373.88 (benefits include life insurance, 401k plan and vacation, personal and sick time-off)

DATE: December 2025

SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm, 9am - 5pm or 10am - 6pm. Schedule may vary due to program needs.

Under the supervision of the Center Director, the custodian is responsible for maintaining the center premises and its equipment in clean, safe and comfortable conditions. For the start-up phase for 2 years this will be an evolving position. Interim roles and responsibilities will be adjusted, and this position requires an individual to be flexible. Job responsibilities will be revisited once all center-based sites are up and running.

• Minimum - High School Diploma or equivalent
• Previous related experiences in general janitorial duties, such as cleaning, repairing and painting.
• Ability to read and write in order to follow written work schedules and keep inventory.
• Friendly and cheerful personality to maintain cooperative interactions with staff, families and children
• Ability to maintain personal work and habits.
• Good health- including annual physical.
• Acquire 3 Fire safety examinations within the first 5 months of employment, F-01, F-07, and S-95.

• Clearance through DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry, Sex Offender Registry clearance, 3 reference checks, physical examination with updated TB test, varicella, Tdap, MMR (fees may apply)
• Obtain Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years) and comply with agency’s policy and procedure regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect

• Cleaning:
  Responsible for sweeping, mopping, waxing all floors on site. Ensuring rest rooms and all spaces on site are free of debris, dust, and dirt as well as maintaining sanitary conditions throughout the day. This includes removing and cleaning garbage bins, washing walls and surfaces, cleaning fixtures, toilets and washbowls.
• Records, Supplies and Equipment:
  Responsible for maintenance of Infection Control Logs, playground safety logs, carbon monoxide/smoke alarm and fire panel logs and all necessary logs to remain in compliance with DOH Article 47. Keeping inventory of distributed sanitary supplies and requesting more when needed;
  Repairing peeling paint, play equipment, furniture and other repairs on site as needed;
  Assisting in moving heavy items throughout the site. Ordering all necessary supplies for the site and keeping an inventory log.
• Daily maintenance of site health and safety:
  Responsible for immediately repairing hazardous conditions on site, such as within the classroom and/or playground, replacing lights; contacting New York City Housing Authority, or management if needed depending on location. Report to the Center Director of any necessary repairs and conditions. Work collaboratively with the Center Director to resolve any facility issues.
• Work collaboratively with other building maintenance staff
• Ability to lift 35 pounds
• Other duties as assigned
